On Safari in East Africa with my husband and two sons, we began in Nairobi and stopped at a shop to see what 'souvenirs' there were.  These black, carved wood elephants caught my sons' eyes. So life-like with small pieces of ivory, each about 4” tall and 5” wide, each boy bought one.
 
I estimate these were carved between 1950-1965 by local crafters.
